Creating familiar, engaging, and meaningful spaces for people living with dementia

  • Spruce Lodge has adopted the DementiAbility® model of care and is in the process of providing training to staff that focuses on abilities, not limitations, and on people and not tasks.

  • We are enhancing our Cottage neighbourhoods to be more familiar, engaging, and supportive for residents living with dementia

  • Working with SensoryScapes to introduce recognizable scenes, décor, and visual cues in hallways and sitting areas

  • Installing door skins to replicate

  • Improving lighting to support daytime alertness and calmer evenings, with adjustable, dementia-friendly controls

  • Repurposing underused utility areas into engagement spaces, such as:

    • Tinkering and tool-based activity areas

    • Children’s nursery or daycare area

    • Hands-on activity centres that reflect residents’ lifelong interests

Project Cost: The total project cost is $400,000, however thanks to the generous donation of Windmill Gardens Seniors residence, the balance remaining is $175,000.

Your generosity helps create environments that feel familiar, purposeful, and comforting; places where residents can truly engage and belong.
